Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery & Pastéis de Belém
Belém was the launching point for Portugal's Age of Discovery, where Vasco da Gama set sail for India in 1497 and where the Jerónimos Monastery was built with the profits of the spice trade. The monastery's Manueline cloister is one of the greatest examples of Portuguese architecture. Pastéis de Belém bakery next door has been making the original pastel de nata since 1837, sprinkled with cinnamon and icing sugar.
